This is a sample of how a painting progresses. From photo, to sketch, to background, to painting!

The progress of the Instructor's oil painting is shown below. The painting was inspired by a fabulous photo of Michelle, the Ukalady!

For a SUGGESTION of materials - you don't have to buy everything!

Bring your old materials or buy a small painting kit!

No requirement to do portraits - do landscapes, animals, fantasy

or abstracts - you are the artist! The whole point of this class is to have a lot of fun!!

Materials List
If you have any questions, contact the instructor at: codyhaha@aol.com
Students may work in one medium through the entire 7-week class, or they may move from one medium to the next, as desired.

SUGGESTED LIST OF SUPPLIES:

Buy/bring ONLY those items for the medium that you want to paint. At a minimum you will need:

  • Paint (oil or acrylic) - larger tubes recommended (smaller tubes run out fast!)
  • Gel Medium for acrylic or ODORLESS Paint Thinner for oils
  • Brushes and palette knife
  • Easel (lightweight aluminum/metal tabletop, standing, or portable) (the thin wood ones don't seem to be as sturdy; heavy wood ones are!)
  • Canvas, canvas board, or canvas paper
  • Palette paper (one pad) or palette board/tray to mix paints
  • Plastic cup for water (for acrylics) or Container with tight-fitting lid for paint thinner
  • Apron to keep paint off of your clothing
  • Paper towels for cleanup
  • Three - 11 x 14 canvas boards so that you can practice with paints and brush strokes before painting on your large canvas.

This list presents a basic list of materials for each medium.

These items are suggestions only. Buy only what you feel that you will use.

If you are a beginning painter, you may want to choose a boxed painting set that provides you with paints, brushes, palettes, instructions, etc. These are economical and give a wonderful variety of materials. Materials can be found at good art stores, such as University Art (on Meridian) in San Jose or at Michael's Arts & Crafts Stores (Westgate and McCarthy Ranch shopping centers).

*NOTE: Make sure that your canvas is no larger than what you can carry to and from class!
All artists
IMPORTANT - If you buy a paint kit with tiny tubes of paint, you will quickly run out of paint. Buy a kit with larger tubes. You don't need a kit with a dozen colors. You will learn how to mix many colors from the basic colors (red, yellow, blue, black, and white).

ALL ARTISTS
1. 4 x 6 photos or drawings to enlarge (using the in-class Tracer) or your own enlarged Xerox image (using your graphite or carbon paper) (OPTIONAL if you can draw your own images!)
*NOTE: Do not bring precious photos because the heat from the Tracer may cause your photo to curl! Bring a duplicate photo or a Xerox copy instead!
When creating Xerox copies that will be used with carbon paper, use the grid system (please refer to any art instruction book that explains using the grid, or wait for an explanation in class). For example, this means that your original 8 x 10 photo will be enlarged to 20 - 8 x 10 images to fit your format!
