When I was a young woman, I was horse crazy! I took care of other people's horses so that I could ride them. I drove around in an old car (59 Buick Le Sabre with winglike fins or a 63 Pontiac Bonneville convertible), and kept my boots, saddle, and bridle in the trunk. I rode gymkhana (barrel racing) and did a lot of trail riding too. I won awards in equestrian events as part of my Girl Scout Horse troup. I was also a writer for the SPUR equestrian news. This love of horses is evident in many of my early paintings. The horse and rider, or the horse alone become transferred into personal visions of motion, freedom, and power.

Watering Hole (acrylic) Here's a blast from the past! I painted this acrylic (40" x 30") in 1972! I did everything from scratch - built my own stretcher bars, bought the linen and washed out the sizing, then stretched the linen over the bars, prepared it with several coatings and sandings of gesso primer, and then built the frame for it! It was a good experience for me to do things as the "old-style" painters had done - everything from scratch! 30 years later, I still enjoy this painting, which captures the peaceful scene of horses at a watering hole. |
